You have a business in Panama. You sell something: food, clothes, services, whatever. You know you should be on social media because "everyone's there." But you open Instagram, see the big brands with their professional productions, and think: how do I compete with that?
The short answer: you don't compete with that. You compete by being authentic, approachable, and consistent. And in Panama, that works better than you'd think.
Let's go step by step.
Pick your battle: you don't need to be everywhere
Many businesses make the mistake of opening accounts on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube all at once. Result: none of them work well because you can't keep up with all of them.
Pick 1 or 2 platforms max. Which ones? Depends on what you sell and to whom:
- Instagram: if your product is visual (food, clothing, decor, beauty). The audience is younger (18-35). Ideal for photos and Reels.
- Facebook: if your customer is older (30+) or if you sell services. Facebook groups in Panama are gold: "Cosas de Panamá," buy-sell groups, community groups. Your customer is there.
- TikTok: if you can make tutorial-style content, behind-the-scenes, or entertainment. Growing fast in Panama and organic reach (without paying) is much higher than Instagram.
If you sell event catering, Instagram + Facebook. If you tutor math, Facebook + TikTok. If you run an auto shop, Facebook (local groups are key) + TikTok for videos of the work.
Content that sells (without sounding like a commercial)
Your content shouldn't be "buy this, buy this, buy this." People ignore that. Your content should be three things:
1. Show the process
Making tortillas? Record from dough to griddle. Mechanic? Show the before and after of an engine. Hair stylist? A time-lapse of a full cut. People love seeing how what you sell gets made. It builds trust and curiosity.
2. Share what you know
If you sell plants, teach people how to care for them. Electrician? Explain why you shouldn't overload outlets. Make desserts? Share the tip so the cake doesn't collapse. Giving free information doesn't cannibalize your sales. It positions you as an expert, and people prefer buying from someone who knows.
3. Tell your story
Why did you start your business? What challenges have you faced? Who was your first customer? Stories connect. In Panama, where personal recommendations are worth gold, making people feel like they know you is a huge advantage.
How often to post
You don't need every day. But you do need consistency:
- 3 times per week is a good pace to start.
- Alternate: a process post, an educational one, and a direct sale or promotion.
- Use Stories daily. They're more informal, easy to make, and keep your presence up without much effort.
Free tools that make everything easier
- Canva: for designing posts, stories, banners. Has ready-made templates you just customize. Free.
- CapCut: for editing Reels and TikTok videos. Free and very easy to use.
- Meta Business Suite: for scheduling Instagram and Facebook posts in advance. Free and directly from Meta.
- Google Keep or Notion: for planning your weekly content. Nothing fancy needed.
When to pay for advertising?
Start organic. When you're clear on what content works (which posts get more likes, comments, messages), then invest in amplifying that.
In Panama you can start with $5-$10 daily on Facebook/Instagram ads. That's enough to:
- Boost a post that already performed well.
- Drive traffic to your WhatsApp Business (where you close sales).
- Reach people in your specific area (El Chorrillo, San Francisco, David, whatever applies).
Rule: don't pay for ads until your profile looks professional. Clear profile photo, bio saying what you sell and how to contact you, and at least 9 posts published.
The biggest mistake: quitting
The main reason businesses fail at social media isn't lack of design or budget. It's lack of consistency. They post enthusiastically for two weeks and then disappear for a month.
Think of social media as digital word-of-mouth. In Panama, word-of-mouth has always worked. Social media is that, amplified. You need to be present so people remember you when they need what you sell.
