What to do with an old hard drive in Panama: Reuse, donate, or recycle securely
You upgraded your computer and now have an old hard drive sitting in a drawer. Trash? Not so fast. A hard drive, even if it is no longer your main storage, still has value: it can become an external backup unit, host a home server, or, if it definitely does not work, be recycled responsibly. The important thing is that it never ends up in the regular garbage. In this guide we explain all available options in Panama.
Before anything else: destroy your data
Even if you formatted the drive, data can be recovered with specialized software. Before donating, selling, or recycling a hard drive, make sure to eliminate information permanently:
- Use secure erase software: tools like DBAN or low-level formatting overwrite the drive's sectors multiple times.
- Physical destruction: if the drive no longer works and contains sensitive information, you can destroy the internal platters with a hammer or drill. It is drastic, but infallible.
Once your data is completely secure, the hard drive will be ready for its next life, whether reused or donated for responsible recycling.
Option 1: Turn it into external storage
