Thinking you need to be an artist, own an expensive Mac, or have years of study to do graphic design is a myth that's costing you opportunities. Here's how to start from zero, with free tools, right from Panama.

What you actually need (and what you don't)

You don't need:

  • To be good at drawing. Graphic design is not illustration.
  • A Mac computer. Any laptop or desktop works.
  • Expensive software. Today's free tools are incredibly powerful.
  • A university degree in design. Your portfolio matters more than your diploma.

You do need:

  • A computer with a web browser (literally any device works)
  • Internet connection
  • Willingness to practice
  • An eye for what looks good (this is developed, you're not born with it)

The 3 free tools you should start with

1. Canva (canva.com)

Canva is the perfect entry point. It's free, runs in your browser, and has templates for everything: Instagram posts, flyers, presentations, business cards, YouTube thumbnails.

What to learn in Canva:

  • Basic composition (where to place text, images, elements)
  • Using cohesive colors
  • Typography (which fonts pair well, when to use bold)
  • Exporting in correct formats (PNG for web, PDF for print)

Start by recreating designs you like. See an Instagram post that looks great? Try making something similar in Canva. That teaches you more than any tutorial.

2. Figma (figma.com)

Figma is the tool professionals use. It's free for personal use, runs in the browser, and teaches you the fundamentals of interface design (UI design).

What to learn in Figma:

  • Screen design for apps and websites
  • Grid systems and alignment
  • Reusable components
  • Basic prototyping (connecting screens)

If you want to do professional design in Panama, Figma is the tool you need to know. Every tech company and digital agency uses it.

3. GIMP (gimp.org)

GIMP is the free alternative to Photoshop. It downloads for free and works on Windows, Mac, and Linux. It's more complex than Canva but far more powerful for photo editing and image manipulation.

What to learn in GIMP:

  • Cropping and resizing images
  • Adjusting brightness, contrast, and color
  • Working with layers
  • Background removal
  • Basic photo retouching

Don't try to learn everything at once. Start with Canva, move to Figma when you want interface design, and use GIMP when you need advanced photo editing.

The graphic design market in Panama

Graphic design is an in-demand skill in Panama. Every business needs:

  • Visual content for social media
  • Marketing materials (flyers, banners, cards)
  • Logo and branding design
  • Professional presentations

You don't need to be a Senior Designer to start earning money. With Canva and a basic portfolio, you can already offer services to small businesses in your area. Many businesses in Panama pay $50-$200 for a set of social media posts, and more for full branding.

Digital agencies, startups, and mid-size companies in Panama City are constantly looking for designers. The ones using Figma will hire you faster if you already know the tool.

Tips I wish I'd received

Copy before you create. At first, copying other people's designs (for practice, not for publishing) teaches you more than trying to invent from scratch.

Look at design all the time. Open Pinterest, Dribbble, Behance. See what makes a design look good. Analyze: why does it work? What do the designs you like have in common?

Don't wait to be "good" to show your work. Publish from day one. Getting feedback is the fastest way to improve.

Learn typography. Font combinations make or break a design. Learn which fonts work together and which to avoid.

Colors matter. Use cohesive palettes. A design with 7 different colors looks amateur. Two or three well-chosen colors look professional.

Want to start but need guidance? Crezendo's workshops give you the structure and support you need to launch with confidence. You're not alone in this.
